{"id":251,"date":"2023-05-26T17:50:25","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T17:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testv69.demowebsitelinks.com\/LiminalConsultingWP\/?p=251"},"modified":"2025-02-28T17:53:48","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T17:53:48","slug":"mother-son-convo-race-identity-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testv69.demowebsitelinks.com\/LiminalConsultingWP\/mother-son-convo-race-identity-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother-Son Convo: Race &#038; Identity, Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Jacob and I get together again in <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/q___jfB9ICs\">Episode 26<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/podcastsconnect.apple.com\/my-podcasts\/show\/uncommon-voices-uncommon-visions\/fa194100-6019-4283-b65b-79221625166d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/6dFF5dbbM5RmrjO0yrjMl2?si=e3726428c92e4b9b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.google.com\/feed\/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8yMDI5NDQ4LnJzcw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Play<\/a>) to continue our conversation, this time after watching the documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbo.com\/movies\/1000-me-growing-up-mixed\">1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed<\/a> on HBOMax (newly renamed Max) to further discussion about race and identity.\u00a0 Jacob and his brothers are Swedish, Irish, Eskimo, Native American (just a smidge), and Black.\u00a0 It\u2019s clear that during our conversation, despite my efforts to ensure that my children can correctly identify themselves racially\/ethnically, Jacob is confused about the name of his grandmother\u2019s tribe, Inupiaq, and his grandfather\u2019s country of origin, Finland.\u00a0 Though, interestingly enough, he\u2019s intrigued to think of himself as a second generation immigrant, though he doesn\u2019t think it counts.\u00a0 Should I be alarmed, or is this just a result of the assimilation process?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">We discussed my efforts to help my sons be successful by listening to them when they expressed interests in activities, even when it was outside of my own comfort zone.\u00a0 The unintended consequence of which meant my sons had far more in common with their White peers than their Black peers.\u00a0 This led to a conversation about access and opportunity.\u00a0 How do kids\u2019 programs recruit diverse participants in an equitable manner?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s important to emphasize this is not a scripted conversation.
