Counseling

Counseling for Individuals

Counseling begins with a 90-minute intake session in which we get to know each other, and I begin the process of learning about what brings you to counseling so that I can make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. After the first session, we meet weekly for 55 minutes. In these sessions, we will work together to explore, discuss, learn, and challenge the various aspects of your anxiety which have been creating discomfort and holding you back from living the life you want to live.

I am a cognitive-behavioral therapist who applies the theories and practices of the family of cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) including rational-emotive behavioral therapy (REBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), inference-based CBT (ICBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and more to help my clients manage and overcome OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and phobias.

I meet with clients in my office, by video, or by phone on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays by appointment. If you are interested in becoming a client, please complete the request for a free consultation and I will contact you with available time for this free consultation. During the consultation I can answer your questions and you can share a summary of what your counseling needs are.

Consultation

Consultation for Therapy Professionals

I recognize there are not enough OCD and anxiety specialists to accommodate the client demand. Because of this shortage, I am available to help other therapists with individual cases or therapists who want to learn more about anxiety and OCD treatment for use in their own practices. If you are interested in professional consultation, please complete the contact form or call me and I will contact you to set up an appointment. My rates are reasonable and will be discounted if you want to meet for multiple sessions or are an LPC-A (this would not count as supervision if our interactions are more didactic in nature).

Supervision

Supervision for LPC-A Counselors

I am in the process of earning my LPC Supervisor license with the state of South Carolina. This is a two year process in which I both provide and receive supervision. Having been a counselor since 2000, I have a wealth of experience to share with newer counselors. I am very much interested in helping the next generation of counselors learn and mature. If you are interested in receiving supervision from me, please complete the request for a free 15-minute consultation and I will contact you about setting up a time to discuss your interest in supervision.

Ethics

I understand that when you come to counseling you are choosing to put your trust in me in a number of ways.  I take my job and profession seriously and want you to know what you can expect from me.

Confidentiality – Many people tell me I am the first person they have told about events or symptoms.  What you share in counseling is private, often sensitive, and will be treated as such.  I do not breach your confidentiality unless I need to fulfill my duty to protect you or someone else from harm or unless you have given me permission to share for medical or legal reasons.

Acceptance – My role in your treatment is to help you get better and be your best, not to judge you or change you into something you don’t want to be.  Your thoughts, actions, feelings, race, gender, sex, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, nationality, and all the other things which form and shape you are valuable.  I welcome the opportunity to get to know the whole you.

Evidence-based treatment – You are committing to improve your life through counseling and I am committed to providing you with care based on theories and techniques which have been proven to work.  CBT and ERP have years of research behind them which show real, lasting effects.

Integrity – A counselor is genuine, honest, professional, dedicated, and kind.  All my interactions with clients are grounded in these values and reflect who I am as a person.
